Here’s a simple knitted hat pattern we’ve been making in our family for nearly 10 years now. (I remember baby Marlow wearing a knitted hood hat I had made for her when she was in my belly!) It’s the perfect project for a beginner knitter, and the result is super cute!

All you need is a hank (or ball) of yarn, circular knitting needles (sizes US 8-10 or 5-6mm) and one yarn needle. (The hats above were made with Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Aran wool and 5mm needles.)

Here are the instructions to make your own knitted hood hat:

  • Cast on 66 stitches and knit even for 9 inches (23 cm) in garter stitch. (For a smaller size to fit a baby, you can cast on 60 stitches and knit for approximately 7 inches/18cm).
  • Bound off leaving about a 24 inch (60cm) tail.
  • Fold the rectangle in half long ways. You will now have the bound-off stitches lined up along one side. Using the 24 inch tail, carefully sew up along these stitches using whatever method you find most attractive until you reach the middle of the long end — now the top of the hood. Cut the yarn and weave in the end.
  • Add your ties by looping three long strands through bottom corners to double up, creating six braiding strands. Then braiding holding two strands each all the way down.
